Virus Attack #1: Fake Windows Virus Scanner

Upon installing any Operating System version for Windows, it’s always advisable to install some of these following programs.

1) Malwarebytes Anti-Malware (Make sure to update definitions)
2) CCleaner
3) Spybot – Search & Destroy (Make sure to update definitions)

Some sites have malicious scripts running or by “accident” you go into a website and you are affected by it, and the virus starts executing scripts on your system. You’re immediate reaction is to close you’re browser…However, a virus scanner is running and saying that you have hundreds of viruses on your computer, and you have to click on buttons…but doing this will cause you to further get effected by the virus. Some of these are also scams that you have to call a person and give them your credit card info in order for them to fix this… Don’t do this!

Symptoms: Some of them are restricting access to many commands that will leave you crippled. If you are crippled to the point that you can’t even run any virus removal software or accessing the control panel or task manager, it may be too late and you’re best choice to is to reinstall the OS. However, if you are still able to access at least the registry or a virus removal program, then you are in good shape for now. Other symptoms is that even if you “end task” the fake virus process that is running you think that it is gone…
However, if you access your computer’s control panel or even open MalwareBytes, then it will execute the script again and the fake virus program starts up again.

Solutions: Best thing to do is make sure your computer is offline. Restart your computer and enter safe mode (F8) before Windows logo, or keep spamming it when it is in POST BIOS. Select safe mode(No internet one). Once you are in, start up Spybot – Search & Destroy. Click on “Search & Destroy” and click on “Check for problems”

Leave that running until it’s done, you should see entries that you haven’t seen before like “Security Center” which that is the culprit. When spybot is fully done searching, remove the entries and restart your computer. Login normally and run spybot again to check to see it’s fully removed. If removed successfully, you should be able to open your control panel and MalwareBytes without any problems. Also make sure to clear your internet history and cache. This can also be done with CCleaner.

You should be fully cured of the virus!
